In response to the viral coronavirus outbreak making its way across the globe, officials at many Ohio schools are implementing new guidelines in hopes of containing the spread as effectively as possible. At Ohio State University, measurements include a website with tips on keeping one’s self as sterile as possible and an email account towards which people who are concerned may direct their questions. With the announcement, there is also a message reminding those that feel they are in danger of incurring the virus, that the flu- something U.S. citizens have much greater reason to be concerned about contracting- has many of the same basic hygiene etiquette advisories as those that are suggested for the virus.

Those that are concerned are advised to cover one’s mouth when sneezing or coughing first and foremost, an unprecedented proposal implemented beginning in the Spanish Flu Era early last century (1918-1919).  Also suggested is to wash one’s hands and avoid contact with sick people, according to Bruce A. McPheron, Ph.D., Gladys M. Gibbs, MD, and Andrew Thomas, MD, at Ohio State. Without the tireless work of our countries medical professionals, who knows what state the nation would be in. An AI-powered simulation intending to project the infection rates came up with the number 2.5 billion forecasted contractions. Experts say this number is way off base, but putting that on the high end of the potential spectrum, really makes one thankful for the medical professionals of the world and the incredible work they’re doing to protect us from such an epidemic.
